New contracts extend Lakesmere’s journey at Heathrow Airport

Following the successful completion of the striking waveform roof of the new Terminal 2 building, Lakesmere is set to play a bigger role in the redevelopment of London’s Heathrow Airport after securing two further contracts with operator BAA.

The building envelope specialist has been appointed to work with main contractor Balfour Beatty to provide an innovative off-site solution for the creation of the new fixed links that will provide access to the new Terminal 2B, the satellite terminal that will form part of the new and improved Terminal 2 building. Lakesmere was initially appointed to design and install the main Terminal 2A’s striking undulating waveform roof, the timely completion of which ensured that the project became fully weathertight ahead of schedule. The building envelope specialist is also currently working on a new gantry system and associated steelwork in addition to work on the terminal’s plant rooms.

Lakesmere will also be completing work at Heathrow’s Terminal 3, where Pier 5 is being extended to accommodate a new Departure Lounge and stand for the Airbus A380. The team will be responsible for the removal of the existing walling and the subsequent installation of preassembled Pro-Roof panels in addition to curtain walling and Trimo composite panels. The new contract at Terminal 3 also represents Lakesmere’s first significant aviation sector appointment with main contractor Morgan Sindall.

Having previously delivered a similar off-site solution at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 4, where the specialist completed two stands for the Airbus A380’s first scheduled flight from Heathrow back in 2009, Lakesmere has enjoyed a successful relationship with client BAA.

Commenting on the new contract wins at Heathrow Airport Lakesmere’s Business Development Manager Brent Tyrrell said; “We are delighted to have secured two further contracts with BAA and to continue to expand on our portfolio of work in the aviation sector by completing further work at Heathrow Airport. Not only does our work on the main Terminal 2 building demonstrate Lakesmere’s ability to undertake large-scale projects but our appointment to complete smaller yet equally as complex contracts at both Terminal 2B and Terminal 3 illustrates our skill in providing innovative solutions as well as our off-site expertise. We are proud to be contributing to the transformation of Heathrow Airport and look forward to continuing our relationship with operator BAA in the future”.
