Kier preferred bidder to deliver £240m Watford Health Campus


Kier Property has been selected by the Health Campus Partnership (Watford Borough Council, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Watford Football Club) as the preferred bidder to deliver the £240m Watford Health Campus project.

The company beat rival bidder Laing to be awarded the contract to deliver the 375,000sq ft mixed-use development, which will include new hospital facilities for Watford and south-west Hertfordshire, up to 650 homes and a new multi-storey car park.

The Health Campus will regenerate derelict land in west Watford and deliver new employment space and 1,600 local jobs. It will also allow better access for all to improved open public space and reduce traffic congestion.

Kier Property scored highly across a range of areas that ultimately saw its bid come out on top. The Health Campus partnership was particularly impressed by Kier as:

-its masterplan fully meets the aims for the scheme in terms of creating an attractive and sustainable community in west Watford that incorporates health, employment, quality open space and new homes

-its proposal keeps the hospital’s vision for new health facilities at the heart of the scheme and offers the flexibility needed to ensure this can happen

-it offers excellent value for money with a 50:50 long-term joint venture for the public sector

-it has a good track record of delivery and will appoint an experienced and skilled team to take its proposals forward

“The land around the hospital and the slope of the site has been challenging when trying to piece together the Health Campus ‘jigsaw’. The scheme allows parts of the hospital to ‘decant’, whilst other parts are built. It will transform the hospital facilities and site, creating green open spaces, tranquil water frontage and welcoming public spaces. Emergency and normal access to the site will be dramatically improved. At the end of the works our patients, staff and the local community are set to have fantastic new and improved facilities.”

Kier will also be working with the Health Campus partnership to complete the financial and legal aspects of their agreement by December.

Mobile workforce app saves businesses almost £4m


An award-winning mobile workforce management app aimed at engineers and builders out on the road has saved its customers almost £4m since it was launched in November 2011.

MyMobileWorkers, developed by Momote is the UK’s first pay as you go workforce management app which allows a workforce to accurately log any kind of job information on a mobile phone device which is then fed into a back office system

The app eliminates the need for paper job sheets, saving time for both engineers out on the road as well as the administration time taken to process them.

Altogether the app has saved more than 280,000 hours for its customers, breaking down to £3,455,611 in field service hours and £292,782 in administration time. It has also saved customers £8,393 on the 1,721,900 sheets of paper they didn’t need to use, equating to nearly a tonne. Every tonne of recycled paper saves around 17 trees.

The app is used by companies across a variety of sectors including building maintenance, waste recycling and engineering across the North West and UK.

Suffolk based building maintenance company MC Contracts uses the pay-as-you-go mobile workforce management app to assign, track and record job details for its engineers.

The app has already saved the company 45 man-hours a week as engineers no longer have to travel to and from the head office to drop off paper job sheets. Jobs are assigned in the morning via the mobile device and engineers can get straight out on the road.

Mark Calver, managing director of MC Contracts, whose key contract is with a major housing association, said: “Investing in this new technology has been a huge boost to our company, the unique model of paying per job has meant this is affordable.

“Historically we’ve looked at similar systems and they have been cost prohibitive.

“This model of paying per maintenance visit has allowed us to improve the speed with which we can attend maintenance call-outs which benefits us as a business and also benefits the customer.

"The app means the engineer can access all the correct job information instantly at the touch of a button which saves them having to contact the office repeatedly for job details.”

Graham Whistance, founder of MyMobileWorkers, said: “Saving businesses money and increasing efficiency is one of the main reasons we launched MyMobileWorkers in the first place and the results speak for themselves.

Plans Submitted for New Blackburn Bus Station

Plans have been submitted for a new £4m bus station in Blackburn.

Designed by Capita Symonds – on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council – the new station will be situated in the heart of the town centre on the site of the former market, adjacent to the town’s shopping centre and a new market development.

The relocation of the bus station to the new site will increase footfall outside the shopping centre and the new market, while maintaining a direct link with the rail station and the nearby cathedral quarter development.

The brief for the bus station has been developed in conjunction with the future operators/managers of the facility who expressed a desire for a striking yet functional design that provides a safe and secure environment connected directly to the pedestrian realm. The facility will contain 14 bus stands plus an additional three layover spaces, space for public functions and community events, a café and retail kiosk and a focal hub building.

The design is conceived as a light weight elegant canopy within the centre of the town which sails over the concourse area. The two storey hub building is positioned at the southern end of the concourse and accommodates a travel information centre and public/staff welfare facilities.

The outward facing elements of the building are flat and orthogonal. In contrast, the underside of the canopy is free flowing and consists of a number of glazed slots cut in the canopy to allow daylight to penetrate onto the concourse area. Directly below each of the slots is a hanging loop which appears to be pulled down from the canopy to reveal a glazed opening. The composition of these draws inspiration from the cotton weaving looms, and drying cotton bundles, a reference to the town’s industrial past.

There are four loop types (A, B, C & D) which are arranged to alter the scale of the concourse and create a rhythm of peaks and troughs along its length. Loop A is designed to provide support to the whole canopy allowing the canopy to appear as one floating unified element.

The station forms part of the Pennine Reach rapid bus transport scheme which aims to improve public transport connectivity within East Lancashire, reduce journey times, and improve passenger facilities. The route, which covers 21 miles, will provide improved waiting facilities and passenger information, bus priority measures, and innovative payment and ticketing solutions.

FB Chain Ltd launches new brand of leaf chain specifically designed for the type of heavy-capacity forklift trucks, reach stackers and container handlers


Hertfordshire-based FB Chain Ltd has announced the launch of a new brand of leaf chain specifically designed for the type of heavy-capacity forklift trucks, reach stackers and container handlers used in and around ports, harbours and other freight terminals.

SEB SuperEndurance chain – which controls a truck’s essential hydraulic mast functions - has been developed to ensure the highest levels of truck uptime while minimising the requirement for routine chain maintenance.

“The initial costs and ongoing maintenance charges associated with leaf chains used on large pieces of materials handling equipment are high,” says Peter Church, managing director of FB Chain.

“Chains are time consuming to inspect and maintain and often require specialist lifting equipment to deal with them. Of more significance, however, is the cost incurred when a large piece of equipment is ‘out of service’ because its chain has failed.

“If, for example, the leaf chain malfunctions on a container handler, reach stacker or forklift, the equipment is out of action until the chain is repaired or replaced and the resultant downtime is costly and disruptive.”

FB Chain’s new SEB SuperEndurance chain has a number of unique features which combine to offer financial, environmental and throughput efficiency benefits.

For instance, the chain has solid seamless bushes pressed in to two inner links. In simple terms, this bush design allows better contact between the chain’s plates and pins, which increases the chain’s resistance to wear significantly.

Chain wear is further reduced by the incorporation of a synthetic O-ring which provides a seal between the plate and the pin and retains lubricant in the part of the chain where it is most needed. This means the chain requires less lubrication – which cuts operating costs – and reduces the amount of oil which is washed off during routine cleaning.

“Many chain oils cannot handle the high internal loads experienced in chains fitted to container handling trucks,” explains Peter Church.

He continues: “This is especially true when trucks are fitted with spreader units that result in the chain being constantly under load even when the truck is not lifting. The O-ring and bush construction of SEB SuperEndurance chain reduces bearing pressure and retains oil in the right place – which extends the chain’s life significantly.”

In addition, to reduce the impact of salt and humidity, SEB chain is treated with a zinc flake coating which offers six times greater corrosion protection than traditional untreated chain.

“The extended life of SEB chain significantly reduces fleet operating costs for any port-based application. The chain’s design not only means that users buy less chain, it also ensures that materials handling equipment spends less time ‘out of service’,” says Peter Church.

All the major dimensions, breaking loads and working loads of SEB SuperEndurance chain are compatible with the standard chain types used by all leading materials handling equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

United Nations defer decision on deadly chrysotile asbestos used mainly in cement products


The Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade has 39 substances on its so-called PIC list, under which an exporting nation must ensure no substances leave its territory without the consent of the recipient country.

The member governments to a United Nations-backed treaty aimed at helping developing countries more effectively manage chemicals and pesticides have postponed a decision until 2008 on whether to add the world's most widely used form of asbestos, identified as causing cancer, to an international watch list.

Member States meeting in Geneva could not reach consensus on adding chrysotile asbestos, which is used mainly in cement products and accounts for about 94 per cent of current global asbestos consumption. All other forms of asbestos are already on the list.

The World Health Organization (WHO), which has identified chrysotile as a human carcinogen, reports that at least 90,000 people die each year of asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), said in a statement that the deferral raises concerns for developing nations about how to protect their citizens. UNEP and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) provide the secretariat to the Rotterdam Convention.

“While discussions continue over the next two years, exporters should feel a special responsibility to help importers manage chrysotile safely,” he said.

Alexander Müller, Officer-in-Charge of FAO’s Department of Agriculture, Biosecurity, Nutrition and Consumer Protection, said the inclusion of chrysotile “would not constitute a recommendation to ban its global trade or use. With many more actively traded chemicals likely to be considered for inclusion in the future, it is important now to think through the precedent that we may be setting for the Convention.”

A panel of experts decided in February that chrysotile meets the Convention’s conditions for listing, and this conference accepted that conclusion. A key requirement for listing is that two countries from two different regions must have banned or severely restricted the chemical in question, and in this case, Australia, Chile and the European Commission have done so.

Construction Project Manager


A project manager is a professional in the field of project management. Project managers can have the responsibility of the planning, execution, and closing of any project, typically relating to construction industry, architecture… Construction project managers in the past were individuals, who worked in construction or supporting industries and were promoted to foreman. It was not until the late 20th century that construction and Construction management became distinct fields.

Until recently, the industry lacked any level of standardization, with individual States determining the eligibility requirements within their jurisdiction. However, several Trade associations based in the United States have made strides in creating a commonly-accepted set of qualifications and tests to determine a project manager’s competency.

* The Project Management Institute has made some headway into being a standardizing body with its creation of the Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.
* The Constructor Certification Commission of the American Institute of Constructors holds semiannual nationwide tests. Eight American Construction Management programs require that students take these exams before they may receive their Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree, and 15 other Universities actively encourage their students to consider the exams.
* The Associated Colleges of Construction Education, and the Associated Schools of Construction have made considerable progress in developing national standards for construction education programs.

The profession has recently grown to accommodate several dozen Construction Management Bachelor of Science programs.

Civil Engineering Projects


A civil engineering project is a project which involves the construction and renovation of a structure or significant alteration in the environment. An example of a built civil engineering project might be a hydroelectric dam which is used to generate power which providing flood and irrigation control, while an environmental alteration might involve beach nourishment to protect a coastline.

While many people link the discipline of civil engineering with public works projects, civil engineering projects can also take place in the private sector, as when a firm constructs a major office tower or when a homeowner requests the services of an engineering company to repair damage caused by a natural disaster.

Civil engineering projects are taking place on a very diverse scale all over the world. Some examples of civil engineering projects include: updating a city’s sewage processing system to accommodate a growing population, building a canal, constructing a bridge, widening a roadway, wetlands restoration, and earthquake retrofitting of private homes so that they will meet local building codes. There are many disciplines within the very broad field of civil engineering, and projects also typically involve input from other experts as well as a civil engineer, with an engineering firm supervising the civil engineering project to ensure that it is done correctly.

The term “civil engineering” was coined to differentiate this very old branch of the field of engineering from the even older military engineering, which involved the application of math and science to military problems. Developing earthworks to serve as fortifications is an example of military engineering, for example, while creating earth walls to contain livestock falls under the purview of civil engineering. Some notable civil engineering projects such as the Great Pyramids, the Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China have lasted for thousands of years.

Civil engineering utilizes math and science to serve the human population in some way. Civil engineers are very concerned with the safety and efficiency of every civil engineering project, and they are also engaged in making projects which are designed to be lasting, which means that they must be flexible enough to accommodate changing usage needs in addition to being very sturdy and built to meet or exceed safety requirements.

A civil engineering project can involve starting from scratch to meet a need or solve a problem, as when civil engineers construct a wind farm which is used to generate renewable energy. It can also involve renovating, retrofitting, and updating existing projects to address changing uses and damage, in addition to correcting or fixing structures which were built with techniques now deemed outdated, or which failed due to faulty construction.

Downwell Demolition wins Recycling Contract of the Year award


For the CRA’s first annual award scheme, submissions were invited in a variety of categories with the Recycling Contract of the Year being one of the most fiercely contested.

Downwell Demolition has won the Construction Recycling Alliance’s (CRA) prestigious ‘Recycling Contract of the Year’ award. The company’s impressive recycling performance whilst demolishing at number of structures at the famous Leavesden film studios formed the basis of its successful entry.

Downwell Demolition’s successful entry focused solely on its six month contract at Warner Brothers’ Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire. The project entailed stripping-out and dismantling the world-famous studio buildings where the entire series of Harry Potter films together with the James Bond film Goldeneye were produced. A total of seven stage set buildings were stripped of their ceilings, roofs and existing sound-proofing to allow the creation of new structures that can be used to produce forthcoming blockbuster movies.

Downwell Demolition was able to demonstrate high levels of reuse and recycling whilst carrying out the various activities during the project, which included dismantling the scaffold framework housed in the high ceilings of the film sets, thus allowing it to be reused elsewhere on site. The company also successfully completed the crushing, screening and stockpiling of 20,000m3 of concrete rubble on-site so as to allow the material to be reused during the facility’s redevelopment. Other material such as wood, scrap metal and plastics were segregated and recycled at dedicated facilities thus ensuring a recycling rate in excess of 97%.

Commenting on Downwell Demolition’s success company director Matt Philips remarked, “I am really pleased to accept this prestigious award on behalf of all the entire Downwell team. The Leavesden project was challenging in many respects and our team of operatives and labourers not only worked hard on completing what was asked of them on time and on budget but also excelled at reusing and recycling waste materials arising from the work. The award also acknowledges Downwell Demolition’s on-going investment in recycling equipment with our latest machine, a Scavik jaw crusher, used to good effect throughout the project.

Director of the CRA, David Barnes, summarised Downwell Demolition’s success, “Downwell is one of the demolition industry’s up and coming companies, so it was reassuring to see their commitment and determination in reusing and recycling as much of the material on site as possible. The company fought off some strong competition to win this award and they should be justifiably proud of their success”.

New Network for Marseille’s School of Management by NextiraOne and Cisco


The EMD School of Management, a non-profit organisation, is committed to training tomorrow's decision-makers in management skills and the practice of business ethics, based on human values. Established in 1964 it welcomes school-leavers (post-baccalaureat) and professionals in initial or continuing training.

In order to meet its growth and be able to welcome new students, the EMD School of Management decided to construct a new building in Marseille on the Euroméditerrannée campus. These new premises will open in October 2012 and will accommodate 500 students, around 20 administrative staff and a number of teachers.

On the recommendation of a number of higher education institutions in France and abroad, the EMD School of Management chose equipment manufacturer Cisco and NextiraOne, Europe’s leading communications services expert, as the system integrator to build the school’s IT and telecoms network, including a range of connected devices. The project began in March 2012 and will be fully completed in September 2012, in time for the start of the new school year.

"With the rapid growth in the EMD School of Management, our premises were quickly becoming cramped and we could no longer accommodate new students, so the construction of a new building was an imperative," said Xavier Palou, CEO of the EMD School of Management. "We have many partnerships with universities and schools abroad with whom we work very closely, so we needed to develop an IT infrastructure that would be stable, secure, efficient and scalable enough to allow the school to continue to develop and for students to study effectively.”

The new building included in all a 450 square meter auditorium, 30 classrooms, four 70-seat lecture halls and a learning centre of 600 square meters that all had to be equipped and connected to the network. With Internet access a critical factor for the school and all its students, the EMD School of Management built its new site on the first optical fibre node in Marseille, thereby enabling very high quality communications.

NextiraOne used a Cisco LAN infrastructure and WiFi system to develop and integrate the new and complemented it with a disaster recovery system in case of failure. The implementation included 58 WiFi hubs, and a Business Edition 6000 Communication Server for IP telephony integrating Cisco Jabber Mobile which in particular will allow the 50 users to use iPhones over the school network. A redundant infrastructure firewall has also been installed and a server to manage student enrolment and other applications is being hosted in the SFR cloud (national telecoms operator with recently launched own cloud services).

A system of wireless telephony is also being deployed that will allow school employees to follow the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend, as they will be able to connect their own tablets, smartphones and other devices to the network.

Video is also a significant part of the project: to provide security for the new building, 16 surveillance cameras have been integrated into the network, based on a video security infrastructure from Axis and Milestone. Classrooms are equipped with IP cameras that will send video to any desk and any room in the school and around the world (as part of the partnership activities of EMD with other schools and universities). This will allow the school to extend its strategy of collaboration with other higher education establishments in France and abroad.

Finally, the EMD School of Management had a keen desire to include a research dimension. The school's network has therefore been designed to interface, share and interact with other centres and major research networks throughout the world.

Throughout the project we have found ourselves working with professionals who understood our needs and problems and provided us with relevant advice and day to day presence. ENGINEERED FOR EXTREMES- J D Neuhaus


With nearly 270 years of experience in the design and manufacture of high performance handling and lifting equipment, the J D Neuhaus company has updated their ‘logo and slogan’ to a design which more closely represents their latest products, including new developments, designed for applications in some of the toughest markets and environments.

For many years the logo slogan of ‘powered by air’ was fully appropriate for their full range of hoists, cranes and winches. More recently, however, the introduction of hydraulically powered products has been predominant, suitable for the operating conditions in heavy engineering markets such as shipbuilding, mining, tunnelling and oil and gas exploration which all have their own unique requirements. To do justice to these developments, the logo slogan has been updated to ‘engineered for extremes’, which the company feel is more representative of their current product performance and developments. The new logo also incorporates a modern typeface which is more powerful and vibrant, reflecting the changes in the markets served.

JDN products incorporate 100% duty ratings, insensitively to humidity and dust while operating at temperatures from -20°C to +70°C. They are ideally suited for working in hazardous atmospheres and are Ex rated for use in potentially explosive areas. Located on the Penglais and Plas Gogerddan campuses, The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is a world class award winning research and teaching centre at Aberystwyth University, Wales. The venture brings together around 300 research, teaching and support staff to conduct basic, strategic and applied research into biology from the level of genes and other molecules to the impact of climate change and bio-energy on sustainable agriculture and land use.

Their aim is to help find workable solutions for some of humanity’s most urgent challenges, both nationally and internationally. This includes human and veterinary diseases, food production and bio-energy in the face of climate change, growing populations, water scarcity and competing demands for land and IBERS is already carrying out innovative work in producing fuels from energy crops such as high-sugar grasses.

A central requirement for both project briefs was to design an architecture driven by low energy and sustainable design principles to reflect the nature of the scientific research and the University’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This has been achieved by incorporating a number of environmental features, including sedum roofs, rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and sustainable timber cladding with a biomass boiler at Gogerddan and ground source heat pumps at Penglais – all of which helped the project achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and win two BRE national sustainable design awards.

To control access to and within both facilities, the University specified a SALTO smart access control system which has been supplied, installed and commissioned by SALTO Certificated Partner LOCK-TECH SYSTEMS, of Swansea.

Working closely with the University and building contractor Willmott-Dixon, one of the UK’s largest privately-owned capital works, regeneration and support service companies, LOCK-TECH installed a range of different door solutions to satisfy the broad requirements of the various teaching facilities, laboratories and public spaces that the buildings incorporate. The range of access control technologies used was instrumental in achieving the successful integration of the various systems.

With the installation of the SALTO access control system the University does not have the worry and cost of managing keys, or changing lock cylinders, but can now update, restrict or deny access to any lock remotely. This gives unmatched flexibility and a secure yet accessible site for the staff and students whilst also allowing controlled visitor access as required.
Both sites used a number of SALTO XS4 Mifare proximity handle sets as well as hard-wired off-line wall readers with one on-line update point connected to the University’s Ethernet network in reception to take advantage of the SVN network feature.

This allows the XS4 locks to read, receive and write information via the University’s staff and student access control fobs. Since most access related information is kept encrypted on these fobs, the wall readers are able to update and receive information from the fobs at any time. So not only is the system easy to use, but its functionality also provides 90% of the benefits of a fully on-line access control system at the cost of a standalone system.

The ‘smart’ fobs, which are in the process of being supplemented by Mifare proximity cards, build up audit trails through normal use giving the University complete control over access and enabling them to log the movement of staff, students and visitors through both the off-line and on-line parts of the system if required. This enables a complete access profile of each individual to be established and updated at the update wall readers as necessary.

Any fobs that become lost or stolen can be quickly and simply deleted from the system just by visiting the readers with up-dated fobs. The system also greatly reduces the number of visits necessary to off-line doors, since user data is simply transferred on fobs by normal use. This eliminates the traditional need to replace locks if security is breached due to the loss or theft of a fob or card.

Reciprocating Saw Blades Generate Discussion on ToolSelect.com- Bosch Daredevil


New Bosch Daredevil reciprocating-saw blades, launched in order to give users longer life and maximum impact in tough demolition applications, are igniting reviews and discussion on reciprocating saws and blades within the ToolSelect.com community.

Designed specifically for demolition tasks, Bosch claims these blades last up to 20 percent longer than other blades in tough applications. The Daredevil blades are meant to cut faster and save time on the job, noting speed, lifespan and ease of use as the major benefits to these blades.

Bosch points to the Daredevil teeth, which use patented 2 x 2 tooth geometry to help the blades to give a clean cut up to 20% faster than competitive blades. The teeth can last up to twice as long with help from micro-blasting, and because the blades are made with metal alloy and protective coating, the increased heat resistance can also extend the life of the blades. With more height and thickness, these new blades give users straighter cuts and less vibration.

Blade sizes range from six to 12 inches and can cut wood (with or without nails), plastics, PVC, thin metal, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals. “Obviously, the actual reciprocating saw has a lot to do with the success and productivity of a job,” says Tom Klein, vice president of marketing and merchandising with ToolSelect. “But if you don’t have the right blades, it won’t matter how good the saw is—you’re going to struggle. We’re excited to see what our members have to say about these new Bosch reciprocating-saw blades in comparison to other blades out there.”

Construction Contract


Definition of a construction contract

The term Contract used in the Construction management can be defined as: “An agreement entered into by two parties under the terms of which one party agrees to perform a specific job for which the other party agrees to pay. Contract documents attached to and/or stated in the agreement form integral parts of the contract”.


Essentials of Contract validity

* The parties to the contract must be competent, and legally capable of playing their intended part. The law can not enforce the agreement on someone who has not the legal capacity to enter into an agreement. This could be due to infancy, lunacy, drunkenness, or being restricted from entering into such agreement by a prior in date agreement or scope of authority.
* The subject matter of the contract must be lawful and definite in respect of requirements and duties of each party. For example a contract violating municipal regulation is not binding and is void in courts. Also uncertainty in respect of the what is wanted may result in the contract being not enforceable by law.
* Proposal and acceptance: There must be a proper proposal by one party and its absolute and unqualified acceptance by the other party. The proposal is not binding without a clear acceptance and is not binding beyond its date of validity.
* Free consent of parties to the contract: Consent is said to be free when it is not caused by force, or undue influence or fraud or misrepresentation.

Breach of Contract

Breach of Contract is the failure to perform it. However, not every failure to perform an obligation amounts to a true breach, as there are a number of excuses for non performance. When a contract has been broken without sufficient excuse or justification, the party who suffers by such breach is entitled to receive from the party in default, a compensation for any loss or damage caused by such breach.

Data Required for Preparing an Estimate:

A Contract may be terminated or brought to an end in either of the following ways:

* Full and satisfactory performance by both parties to their obligations under the contract.
* Breach of contract, when the default of one party releases the other party from the contractual obligations.
* Mutual agreement of the parties to terminate the contract.
* Unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of either party render it impossible to perform his duties or obligations stated in the contract.
* Operation of law to terminate a void contract.

Types of contracts commonly used in construction

* Lump sum contract
* Item rate or unit price contract
* Percentage rate contract
* Cost plus percentage rate contract
* Cost plus fixed fee contract
* Cost plus fluctuating fee contract
* Target cost contrac.

Telematics insurance set to reduce fleet premiums


Pay how you drive insurance using telematics systems has begun to revolutionise insurance for young drivers.

To meet demand, during 2011 a number of British telematics suppliers joined forces with insurance companies to offer services aimed at the retail sector, and, in particular, young drivers.

Over coming months, I predict, the sector will grow rapidly as more insurance brands enter the market.
Meanwhile, the same telematics technology is set to reduce the cost of fleet-based insurance, although here the insurance industry is dealing with a different set of issues.

For example, in the case of retail insurance an individual driver's profile governs premium costs – but with transport fleets a single overall premium is charged, the amount being determined by different drivers' risk profiles. By implementing management systems based on telematics data, fleet operators are able to cut risk – and, therefore, insurance premiums – dramatically.

For the rest of the year and beyond pay how you drive insurance is certain to set the pace, allowing fleets to pay only for mileage covered, provide lower premiums for better driving styles, and help fleet managers decide at an earlier stage which drivers might pose a higher risk.

Moreover, the technology can help them recognise those drivers most likely to have an accident, and spot any high risk driving styles before they become a liability. Not surprisingly, fleet operators' interest in telematics insurance is gathering pace. And I expect many more transport fleets will adopt the new products in coming months, not least because of the cost savings to be made.

My prediction is based on hard experience, our company is one of the pioneers of telematics-insurance technology.
Telematics uptake has been remarkable: during 2011 we installed more than 18,000 tracking systems.

Now, it is virtually certain the use of telematics data in risk assessment will migrate to the fleet sector.

Success at the inaugural of Ecobuild China 2012


The inaugural Ecobuild China featuring more than 15,000 visitors and 127 exhibitors, which took place from 9 to 12 April 2012 in Shanghai has secured its position as the region’s meeting place for the sustainable built environment industry. Ecobuild was part of Expo Build, the premium building and construction event in China, which attracts more than 100,000 building professionals annually. The announcement of Ecobuild China’s achievement follows the recent success of Ecobuild in the UK which was attended by more than 57,000 industry professionals.

“Sustainability in the built environment is an issue that has picked up pace over recent years and shows absolutely no sign of slowing its momentum,” says James Blue, Portfolio Director, Ecobuild. “Ecobuild in the UK has seen phenomenal growth over recent years. We want Ecobuild China to be the annual meeting place for everyone involved in the creation and maintenance of sustainable built environments throughout China and I’m thrilled that the event has been so well received by such a passionate and diverse community.”

Running alongside the extensive Ecobuild China exhibition, the Ecobuild China Conference: Transforming low carbon construction into reality, provided high level debate and discussion by an unrivalled line-up of international sustainable construction experts. This impressive construction designed by Ken Shuttleworth, founder of Make Architects, raised money for the China Children Teenage Fund (CCTF); specifically for the building of an Anji Bamboo Research & Training Centre which will create new bamboo building products and raise skills in sustainable construction among the local community.

Ecobuild’s Eco-design Gallery presented the latest products and project models from leading architecture companies, including ZED Factory, Aedas, BRE and Eurobuild.

Machinery including the Terex Finlay J-1175 Jaw Crusher, C-1540 RS Cone Crusher and Supertrak 694+ are enabling Kendall Plant to process stent - the material left over from the extraction of china clay.

Keith Kendall, who has a background in agricultural contracting, is the owner and director of Kendall Plant.

He made his first venture into crushing 14 months ago, and has been contracted by Brookland Sand and Aggregates at Gunheath Quarry, near to St Austell, to process the stent - millions of tonnes of which are on the site, along with regular deliveries from china clay quarries in the locality.

To cut through the volume, plant was needed with high outputs, and Keith has worked closely with Gareth Johnson, managing director of Finlay Plant SW Ltd, to introduce high performance machinery that delivers maximum value from the processed material – producing a clean and valuable end product.

The process starts with a Terex Finlay J-1175 Jaw Crusher, which has the capacity to take in half-tonne rocks, through to dust.

With an independent pre-screen fitted, fines in the stent can be removed at an early stage in the process – eliminating the need for a reclaimer or any other type of screener to scalp off -45mm.

This function is particularly valuable as the stent material comprises of up to 50 per cent fines in with the granite rock.

Fines fall through the mesh and -45mm is scalped off to make Type 1 803 material, while +45mm goes through the jaw to produce crusher run, of which 75mm is the largest size.

This then goes into the Terex Finlay C-1540 RS, Cone Crusher, which provides the versatility of a crushing and screening plant in one machine.

Featuring an onboard recirculating system and detachable sizing screen, the machine at Gunheath processes 45mm material through the mesh, with +45mm re-circulating and then going into the four-way Terex Finlay 694+ tracked mobile screen at -45mm.

The 694+ offers a triple deck screen configuration, providing three full-sized 6.1m x 1.525m screens, and a hydraulically folded fourth conveyor.

It produces an end single size product of 40mm clean chippings, 20mm clean chippings and 10mm clean chippings, used as decorative material, as well as for ready-mixed concrete and drainage and pipefill material. The 6mm to dust end product is delivered to a nearby manufacturer for concrete blocks.

The machinery currently outputs 2,000 tonnes a day and there is no waste from the processing activity - all the end product material is used, making it a highly-effective recycling process.
