Jersey's sand and gravel quarry takes delivery of a new Terex Finlay 683 Supertrak

A Jersey-based sand and gravel quarry has taken delivery of a new Terex Finlay 683 Supertrak from Finlay Plant Southern. Simon Sand & Gravel Limited – a fifth generation, family-owned quarry situated at St Ouen’s Bay on the west coast – has been supplying the island’s building trade since 1909.

The Terex Finlay 683 Supertrak is being used for the secondary screening and processing of quarried gravel once it has been removed from the sand.

Tracked for full mobility, the machine is fitted with a double deck live vibrating grid. It is producing stockpiles of 16-50mm, 8-16mm, less than 8mm aggregate and backfill. The double deck live vibrating grid, removes all oversize material before the final grading screen.

John Dunne, managing director of Finlay Plant Southern, a Finlay Group company, said: “Simon Sand & Gravel Limited bought the new 683 Supertrak to compliment the other machines they are using.

“We have been dealing with the company for over five years now and have supplied, amongst other things, a Terex Finlay 390 dry screener as well as three Terex Finlay 532 stockpilers, so we were pleased to be able to continue our association with them.”

Jason Simon, owner of Simon Sand & Gravel Limited, said: “Because the equipment Finlay supplied us previously had performed exceptionally well it was an easy decision to return to them for a new machine.”

“We required a mobile screener capable of being moved around the quarry with ease and being on tracks the 683 was the perfect choice.”

A FIRST IN BAKU FOR JW MARRIOTT CREATED BY SCAPE DESIGN ASSOCIATES

Scape Design Associates, renowned designers of landscapes for the hospitality and luxury lifestyle community, has created a first in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, with a breathtaking setting for the monumental new JW Marriott Absheron. Overlooking the historically significant Azadliq (Freedom) Square and adjacent to Government House, the new building and
gardens combine in making an imposing statement of the nation’s emerging status and confidence in its future.

Respectful of both the new architecture and its historic location, Scape’s design for the landscape on the west-facing frontage of the hotel provides for an experience that guides its guests along a processional route from Freedom Square, climbing through a public water garden awash with cascades and water rills up into the hotel environment. At the head of the public gardens, hotel guests follow a further ceremonial covered walkway that leads up between two water hugging covered granite cuboids to the large stylish outdoor terraces of the hotel’s main restaurants, Oro Nero and Fireworks, and finally into the hotel’s bars and restaurants beyond. This entrance is designed as a covered “catwalk” bridging the space between the terraces and providing a touch of glitz and glamour on arrival to the restaurants, embodied at night by fire bowls the reflections of which shimmer across the surface of the surrounding water.

The public gardens rise above Freedom Square like a stepped pyramid created over a series of garden terraces, rising in total five metres above the surrounding streetscape. Throughout these gardens, water – a favoured ingredient in Azerbaijan’s parks – flows and cascades, as a complement to the landmark fountain in the adjoining seafront parkland to the west of the hotel. A central water display and parallel canals, adorned with an array of dancing jets, together with the lines of trees and shrub planting, mirror the lines of the glazing to the hotel exterior and the oval apartment wings flanking each side. The planting has been set out to heighten the drama of the ascent and endorse the sense of exclusive retreat as guests arrive at the restaurants’ terraces. “It was a fundamental requirement that the elevation facing Azadliq Square had an imposing symmetry and our axial response to the design of the building completes this narrative,” says Phil Jaffa, Managing
Director of Scape Design Associates. “Essentially, we have created a modern urban water garden, a new landmark in Baku that shades and celebrates some of the city’s most sought after wining, dining and function destinations.”

Choice of plants was also subject to Baku’s notoriously strong winds, and foliage was selected to shelter guests as they walk or sit on the terraces and to protect them from the dust whipped up by the winds. Planting also acts as an effective acoustic barrier to the noises of the traffic in this central area of downtown Baku. As a result, clusters of hardy bushes at lower-ground level are intermingled with climbing species and a number of large olive trees provide especially good shelter for the windiest north-east corner. Flowering plants surround the restaurant terraces. Many of the plants and trees introduced into the JW Marriott site are already species familiar to landmarks in Baku: the eunonymous hedging, for example, which is associated with Government House and the London Plane trees which
also line the city’s corniche.

Since the majority of the guestrooms have a bird’s eye view of the landscape, Scape’s scheme has not only considered issues of human scale at ground level but also visual pattering from above. The ballroom roof, in particular, which extends out at third floor level has been planted with a variety of flowering species. The main entrance to the JW Marriott Absheron is to the east-facing elevation where Scape has created a dramatic granite-clad water feature. A combination of rough-faced cube grids and ridged panels play with the water to produce, at the same time, both mist and shimmer before the water tumbles at speed over a rough stone wall to achieve a white water effect that drowns out the sound of passing traffic. Two majestic evergreen Thuja trees tower over the water feature, forming an impressive frame to the entrance doors and the hotel within.

Record online and mobile activity for oil and gas industry job site

Oil and Gas Job Search releases its half year online activity report, showing growth and user behaviour since the launch of their new site in September 2011, and their mobile site in January 2012.

Traffic

Over the last 6 months the website has seen a huge 40% increase in web traffic and a 260% increase in mobile traffic to their site. May saw a record number of 500,000 candidate visits and reported more than 4,000,000 page impressions.

Expansion into Traffic Management and Vehicle Restraint Systems by JPCS

With the appointment of two new managers, JPCS, NATIONAL construction and engineering services contractor, has expanded its highways maintenance services into Traffic Management and Vehicle Restraint System (TM/VRS).

Dave Hughes joins as national operations manager and Jason Yates as contracts manager. Together they have more than 38 years’ experience in traffic management and VRS and both join the firm from Enterprise. Calor Gas chooses Quartix telematics for its national delivery and service fleets

Quartix, one of the UK’s leading vehicle tracking service providers, has equipped Calor Gas’s national delivery and service fleets with real-time telematics.

A total of 520 of the £400-million company’s vehicles, including Scanias, Renaults, Dafs and large tri-axle tanker trailers – operating from centres across the country – have been installed with the award-winning Quartix telematics solution.

David Brown, Calor’s fleet asset manager, explained the reasons the company has invested in Quartix telematics: “With such a large and diverse fleet operating throughout the UK we have many areas and aspects to monitor and consider round the clock, and often all at the same time. The Quartix Corporate service enables us to do just that.

“The main reason for fitting a tracking system is security. With transporting high profile products around the country it is important that if we need to know where an asset is at any time, that we can find it quickly. Quartix allow us to do this from any web enabled PC.

“For example, its flexible onscreen mapping shows us precisely the location of each vehicle in real-time, how fast it’s travelling and even how well it’s being driven.

One of Calor’s specific needs was to receive live data from its vehicle pumping systems. After extensive research Quartix specialists were able to establish a connection from the vehicles’ control systems, enabling onscreen reports to be displayed via the Quartix system’s extended reporting menu.

“This means we can see at a glance when the pump starts, stops and its operational duration at each customer site,” said Mr Brown.

Calor Gas is also benefiting financially from the Quartix system’s ability to plan shorter routes and by monitoring drivers, who are encouraged to maintain safe, economical driving styles.

Terex Finlay 984 Makes Its Debut With Installation From Finlay Plant SW

The awesome, next-generation Terex Finlay 984 has made its debut in England, where it is doing the work of three machines - transforming the screening of limestone in the West Country.

Representatives from the Kelston Sparkes Group visited France to see one of the machines in action before specifying it for their screening operation in Frome, Somerset, where the company is contracted by Tarmac to handle dry stone production at Halecombe Quarry.

Supplied by Finlay Plant SW, the machine is currently operating at a rate of 300 tonnes per hour, although Terry O’Callaghan, General Manager of Kelston Sparkes Group, says the machine could run up to 320 tonnes per hour if required.

The economic benefits are compelling – as well as removing the need for two screens and their associated running costs, the machine is also producing 50 tonnes per hour more than was previously achieved on the site.

To aid productivity, Kelston Sparkes Group worked with Gareth Johnson, Managing Director of Finlay Plant SW, to develop a larger hopper to shovel-load 75 mm aggregate in.

Terry O’Callaghan said: “The 984 was the only type of machine on the market that could do what we needed.

“It does the tonnage and has accomplished what we set out to achieve.

“The need for two screeners has also been taken out, which were previously used to take out the dust on 4mm decks, as this new machine takes out the dust sufficiently well.”

Representing the latest in high volume screening technology, the Terex Finlay 984 is a horizontal, three deck screener that is easy to set up, versatile and ideal for handling large volumes of material in quarrying, mining and recycling applications.

It incorporates the 6100mm x 1930mm Terex Cedarapids 6203 triple shaft screen, enabling the screening of four sizes of products for maximum output.

Despite its power, the machine is easy to move between sites, with the four on-board product conveyors - which provide generous stockpiling capacity - able to fold hydraulically into one of the smallest transport envelopes for this class of machine.

Other features include an oval-throw action, which makes the horizontal screen virtually non-plugging, and the ability to fine tune stroke angle, amplitude and the speed of the screenbox, to allow throughput of materials up to 800 tonnes per hour.

Over the years, Finlay Plant SW has worked with Kelston Sparkes Plant Hire to deliver nine machines into the business, which has been established for 60 years.

Terry added: “Finlay Plant SW has always given us good service.

“We do our own maintenance and back-up support and advice is always available.

“Access to spare parts is also reliable and the machines we’ve had over the years have all been good.”

Tarmac’s Halecombe Unit manager, Garry Wason, said: “We’re really pleased to have a machine on site that so greatly improves our productivity, and we are happy to be working with Kelston Sparkes to achieve maximum efficiency and maintain a high quality output.

“The extra tonnage per hour makes our production targets more achievable while keeping in line with our company's cost reduction plan.

“Sustainability is an important consideration for Tarmac, and the 984 has had a big impact on this by allowing us to dispense with two other machines, improving our specific energy consumption and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Gareth Johnson, Managing Director of Finlay Plant SW, which is part of the Finlay Group of companies, said: “The introduction of the 984 has transformed the volume of aggregate produced at Halecombe.

“The plant can work with other Terex Finlay machinery at the site, and offers maximum performance.
