FM Conway and Merton Council sign Highways Contract

Merton Council has signed a five-year contract with FM Conway Ltd after the company was re-appointed to oversee the borough’s highways services.

The new Highways Works and Services Contract 2012 is due to start on 1 September 2012 and will run until 2017, with an option for a two-year extension. Under the terms of the contract, FM Conway will continue to provide the council with a range of services including highway maintenance, carriageway surfacing, lining, civil engineering, traffic management and drainage works.

FM Conway and Merton Council have worked in partnership for more than 30 years. This successful working relationship was demonstrated at the London Transport Awards (LTA’s) in March 2012. The team were awarded the ‘Most Effective Road Safety, Traffic Management and Enforcement Award’ for its ‘South Wimbledon Business Area Streets for People’ project. The LTA’s recognise excellence and innovation in transport initiatives within the Capital.

Gus Smith, Contracts Manager at F M Conway, said: “Merton means everything to F M Conway. It’s our flagship borough. At any one time, we have 60 people working in the borough. We’ve grown up together and developed together, and look forward to a successful future where we can explore exciting innovations together.”

Merton Council’s cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: “We’ve worked with FM Conway for many years in what has proven to be a successful partnership. Our innovative and high-quality transport initiatives have been widely recognised. This year we won an accolade at the London Transport Awards for improvements to the South Wimbledon business area.

“We look forward to working with FM Conway on new initiatives that will ensure our highways are well-maintained and, above all, safe for everyone who visits, lives and works in Merton.”
