Stewart Milne Construction Delivers Landmark Social Housing in Aberdeen

Stewart Milne Construction has completed work on Aberdeen’s first council housing project in over 30 years.

As the first phase of Aberdeen City Council’s new-build social housing programme, the project saw the construction of 85 new homes at three locations across the city. The mission was to create high quality, sustainable and energy efficient 21st century housing which incorporates a degree of flexibility to meet the future needs of tenants. A mixture of two and three-bedroom family properties have been completed in Northfield and Tillydrone in addition to a range of one and two-bedroom homes for varying needs in Cults.

To meet the desired energy efficiency standards, the homes were built using Sigma II Build System, a high specification timber frame build system delivered by Stewart Milne Timber Systems, and have been designed to integrate five renewable energy sources. These include: air source heat pumps; solar thermal panels; solar photovoltaic cells; mechanical ventilation heat recovery; grey water recycling for the flats; and rain water harvesting for the houses. The completed properties are capable of meeting Level 5 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Bill Imlach, managing director of Stewart Milne Construction, said: “With sustainability at the top of the housebuilding agenda and an ever increasing demand for quality public sector housing, the Aberdeen City Council new-build programme has proved itself an industry-leading initiative. The contract required incorporation of several renewable technologies, giving us an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our sustainable building credentials, and our wealth of expertise enabled us to integrate effectively the features into the design and build process.

“We worked very closely with the council throughout the design and build process of the first phase and the project will be a significant addition to our already extensive housing portfolio.”
