Schal İn Charge Of The Project Management Of The Harlow Leisurezone Complex

The Harlow Leisurezone leisure centre's extensive facilities include an eight lane 25m pool, three covered tennis courts, eight badminton courts, a 1100m2 gym, a crèche/nursery, multi-function spaces, and on-site catering and bars. The building is 14,000m2 and built over 3 floors.

Schal, part of design management and consultancy group TPS (a subsidiary of Carillion plc), was responsible for the Project Management and CDM-C role for the development of the Harlow Leisurezone complex.

The Harlow Leisurezone leisure centre has been recognised as the most impressive new commercial project in the region, and described as “a spectacular multi-purpose leisure facility with a variety of intriguing spaces” by judges at the LABC East Anglia Awards. The building was officially opened in January by Hugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport and the Olympics.

As the winner of the Commercial award the project had to display the “positive outcomes that can be achieved through the whole team being committed to building in quality” and that the team had performed a key role in the design and overall project management of a building that could be recognised by the judges as “the most impressive new commercial project in the region.”

Naisha Polaine, Head of Area for the HCA in the East of England, said: “The Harlow Gateway is a great regeneration project that combines affordable and open market homes, community facilities and infrastructure. The Leisurezone opening marks a real milestone in the Gateway project’s life, and we are delighted to see this facility come to fruition.”

David Taylor, Schal’s Project Manager for Leisurezone, affirmed: “This building is a deserved winner because of its regenerative impact on the wider community. Having also been accredited with a listing in the Official London 2012 Olympic Pre-Games Training Camp Guide, it displays how effectively Schal can manage such a large project.”

The project was also runner up in the 2011 RICS Eastern Regeneration awards, and was Highly Commended. The RICS Eastern Regeneration awards raised money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the RICS benevolent fund. The events sponsors included the University of Hertfordshire and English Heritage.
