Countdown to new Forth crossing begins as final bids are handed in

THE new Forth crossing has taken a major step forward with the two bidders for the project handing in their final tenders for the £1 billion contract.
The submission of the bids marked the last significant step before the contract is awarded in April. Transport minister Keith Brown said the bridge was "absolutely vital" to Scotland's economy,

Work is expected to start soon after the deal is signed.

Ministers say the condition of the existing bridge, linking Edinburgh and Fife, is deteriorating after being in use for more than 40 years.

Lorries may have to be banned from it as early as 2017 if corrosion is not halted.

Mr Brown said the latest development meant the new crossing, which is estimated to have a total cost of £2.3bn, was on course to be open in less than six years' time.

He said: "Both consortia bidding for this contract are led by world-class bridge building and civil engineering firms with strong records of successfully delivering similar projects throughout the world.

"The Forth Replacement Crossing is a major part of this government's programme of investment in Scotland's economy and it will safeguard a vital link in the country's transport infrastructure, protect thousands of jobs and secure over a billion pounds in economic revenue.

"The project remains on target to be completed, within budget, in 2016 ."

David Climie, the project's director, predicted there would be a major boost to Scotland's economy from the scheme, which the British Chamber of Commerce estimates will be worth around £6bn in additional economic benefits.
