Civil Engineering And Surveying Firms Report Concerns About The Current Economy

Los Angeles, CA – September 15, 2010 – Paul LaCiura, a Principal at LaCiura Consultants (www.LaCiuraConsultants.com), reveals some facts about the remarkably high rate of unemployment and the dramatic down turn of the economy in the engineering and construction sectors.

“We have several telecommunications projects and a couple small residential/commercial jobs, but there are not many large scale projects out there.” says Mr. LaCiura.

Paul LaCiura has over twenty-five years of experience in the civil engineering industry as a consultant or top level executive. He has been the civil engineer of record on many prestigious projects in California.

According to Mr. LaCiura: “In all the years I have been involved in this industry I have never seen business this slow. Very few construction jobs available, high unemployment rates, very few open positions in civil engineering and a high level of competition between job seekers.”

When asked how experienced job seekers can improve their chances of getting hired he replied: ”Focus on local job opportunities, very few firms are entertaining relocation costs from other regions of the country. Don’t limit yourself to private consulting firms; keep applying to state and local governmental agencies and utilities companies, there is always a turnover of personnel at these agencies due to attrition and promotions. Keep your resume(s) up to date, a six month old resume with an old date and chronological listings shows that you are getting discouraged in your job search. Also, don’t limit yourself to strictly engineering jobs, look for openings in the construction field. Experienced engineers in construction are always highly regarded particularly if they have experience in managing their projects through the construction phase. Most importantly, don’t get discouraged and curtail your job search efforts…the industry will eventually recover and you need to be on top of the openings when they do come up.”

Mr. LaCiura also added: ”We recently launched a blog www.LaCiuraConsultants.Blogspot.com where I will be posting articles on new openings and employment opportunities in southern California, creating an eye-catching resume, getting an interview, and finally landing a job. I encourage engineers to subscribe to the blog and share their ideas and recent experiences.”
