SCAPE APPOINTS FAITHFUL+GOULD TO LEAD ASSET MANAGEMENT, SURVEYING AND DESIGN SERVICES FRAMEWORK

Local authority controlled company Scape has appointed Faithful+Gould, a global construction project and cost management consultancy, as the lead supplier in a major, four year, National Asset Management, Surveying and Design Services Framework (AMSandDS).

The new framework supercedes Scape’s design framework which has been successfully providing professional design services since 2008. The scope has widened and enables UK public sector bodies to have instant access to a complete suite of professional construction consultancy services. These include asset management; construction design and management consultancy; building surveying; architecture, structural engineering; building services engineering and planning.

Public sector organisations can use the framework to supplement their own resources when delivering property and construction projects. Feedback highlighted that many state funded organisations like the flexibility of being able to choose how they can access support – either as an external consultancy or an in house service – so that option was retained in response to demand.

Scape awarded Faithful+Gould the contract, which commences on 1st September, on the basis of a high quality submission and the most competitive price. The framework has the potential to generate and contribute a total construction and projects value of £1bn to the Public Sector over a four-year period.

Mark Robinson, Scape’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “We’re delighted to be working once again with Faithful+Gould in delivering a more holistic solution to our public sector clients. Many have told us about the difficulties they are facing in managing their estates with reduced budgets and fewer staff. We took the opportunity to respond to that challenge.

“By cutting out wasteful procurement processes, and offering a full range of design and technical services at an affordable price, authorities up and down the country will be better placed to access expert advice to achieve their facilities management programme targets in future.”

Jon Sealy, Faithful+Gould’s UK Managing Director, commented: “Appointment to the new Asset Management, Surveying and Design Services framework represents a significant opportunity for Faithful+Gould, our supply chain and our SCAPE partners. It is rewarding that they have acknowledged that we were successful because of our high quality submission and the fact we also offered the public sector real value for money. We recognise these are hugely important factors and this valuable contract is a strong addition to our public sector portfolio.

Faithful+Gould was selected for a second term by Scape following a competitive OJEU compliant process. This saw six private sector firms compete for the contract at full tender stage.

Scape specialises in providing a range of national and regional procurement frameworks so that the UK public sector can procure construction services more quickly and efficiently without having to go through lengthy and costly OJEU processes. The firm also offers a range of tried and tested pre-designed building solutions across sectors including education, health, leisure and blue light services.

£1.3M UCLan Dental Clinic constructed by Bamber Bridge-based Conlon Construction

Work is now complete on a £1.3M refurbishment project to provide a new state-of-the-art Dental Clinic at the University of Central Lancashire.

Conlon Construction has transformed the existing 515 sq m facility located in the Harrington Building on Adelphi Street, Preston. The space was previously used as offices and seminar rooms and is now ready to welcome its first intake of students in September.

Since Conlon commenced work in January 2012, the new Dental Clinic has been formed by converting part of the ground floor of the Harrington Building and linking through to a newly constructed single storey extension, finished in a state-of-the-art zinc cladding system.

Conlon Construction has also created new external landscaping, fire escapes and access ramps into the building.

The Dental Clinic will be equipped with the latest high specification dental chairs, x-ray machines and de-contamination facilities. This will allow UCLan to deliver the latest dentistry practices and procedures to its post-graduate teaching.

Construction director at Conlon Construction, Michael Conlon, said: “The construction of the new UCLan Dental Clinic will provide excellent facilities for UCLan’s students and will offer a base to train budding future dentists.”

Paul Walsh, Clinical Director of the UCLan Dental Clinic said: “We are delighted that this is an initiative which will benefit our students, the local dental profession and the people of the region.

“We have offered specialist training to dentists in a number of expert areas for some time and now those dentists will offer their skills to benefit the local community.

“The investment from UCLan in setting up UDC will not only improve our dental education and training in the region but also provide high quality care to the local community.”

Iain Scales, director at appointed architects for the project, Cassidy + Ashton, said: “Conlon Construction has completed the works to a very high standard with the installation of complex building services and the high-tech metal cladding system.

“After working closely with the firm during the design and planning stages, the result is fantastic and we are confident that the new building will provide first class dental care for students, staff and others who use the facilities.”

Haul of stolen plant machinery recovered with TRACKER Plant

Police in Chorley, Staffordshire has recovered £300,000 worth of plant machinery, thanks to TRACKER. Police on the trail of a stolen vehicle, used its fitted TRACKER device to follow the signal to a remote farm, which led to the discovery of a haul of machinery and resulted in the arrest of three people. Large items of plant were found on the farm, including JCB diggers, Caterpillar vehicles, road rollers and forklift trucks, as well as an assortment of smaller items such as generators.

Using VHF and GPS technology, TRACKER’s SVR system enables the police to pin-point a stolen vehicle, whether it is hidden in a container or lock-up. To date TRACKER has recovered more than 19,500 stolen vehicles - worth a staggering £428 million - since 1993. Each month TRACKER helps to recover an average £2million worth of stolen vehicles.

Inspector Dave Challinor, commander of Burntwood neighbourhood policing unit said, “It was a good partnership, working with TRACKER and the police. This is a really good recovery of property believed to be stolen from all over the UK.”

“TRACKER is the only stolen vehicle recovery provider working with all 52 police forces in the UK and once again this partnership has proved a thorn in the criminal’s side,” explains Stuart Chapman, Police Relationship Manager for TRACKER. “The power of our unique vehicle recovery system helped police uncover a plant theft operation and a collection of vehicles worth over £300,000. By working together with police, we are sending a clear message to thieves, as well as helping to return stolen vehicles to their rightful owners.

“Security is a high priority for the plant sector, as thieves target sites for expensive pieces of machinery, as this case shows. With this in mind, we are bringing plant owners a powerful security system with the launch of TRACKER Plant. Designed specifically for the plant sector, this new product will help protect valuable assets and close the net on criminals.”

TRACKER Plant has been created to offer protection against the growing threat of plant theft. Based on TRACKER’s stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) system, TRACKER Plant significantly increases the chances of recovery. It is Thatcham approved, offering added quality assurance and the possibility of an insurance discount. Furthermore, TRACKER has combined the power of its SVR technology with its fleet tracking capabilities to ensure that TRACKER Plant enables owners and hirers of plant machinery to also monitor its actual usage on and off-site. This helps to boost efficiency whilst benefiting from the ultimate security system in the event of theft.

Government confirms support for anaerobic digestion at ADBA Conference

Building on its inaugural conference in 2009, ADBA's (The Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association) second national conference in London attracted the industry’s leading players to a packed day of speakers and discussions. ADBA's "Maximising the Value" conference saw its Chairman Lord Rupert Redesdale urge members to play their part in DECC’s and DEFRA’s AD Action Plan, which has already reached its first draft.

Landia’s UK & Eire Director commented: “Lord Redesdale was right when he said about the need to shout the loudest. ADBA has made massive strides since it was formed less than 18 months ago. This second national conference shows just what can be achieved by an active association that makes such a sustained effort. There are now close to 200 members, which speaks for itself”.

Ofwat’s Mark Worsfold (Head of Strategy) discussed the regulator’s remit for sludge and the vital need to collect data for the challenging choices regarding its full deregulation.

Speaking for the Environment Agency, Howard Leberman (Senior Advisor on Industry Regulation) broke news that in April, some AD regulation will be relaxed, including the distances from dwellings, workplaces and conservation sites that biogas plants can be built.

Lord Marland, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State DECC confirmed the Government's support for anaerobic digestion. He said he was determined for the industry to expand and for it to take in additional waste streams. Lord Marland also praised the efforts of ADBA and its members, stating that the Government was looking forward to working with them to further develop the sector.

ISG Secures £16 Million City Tower Scheme

ISG has secured the £16 million project to refurbish and upgrade City Tower in Basinghall Street, London for owners Great Portland Estates and investment firm Starwood Capital. The contract sees ISG working across 10 floors of the 21-storey office building – approximately 80,000 sq ft of accommodation, which will remain partially occupied throughout the duration of the fast-track project.

The scheme, a continuation of ISG’s existing relationship with Great Portland Estates, encompasses major refurbishment and remodelling works both internally and externally at City Tower, to deliver BREEAM very good office accommodation and improved public realm space. A key element of the project focuses on the enhancement of the two-storey podium deck at the base of the structure, occupying a much larger footprint than the tower and including a public high walkway area.

At podium level, ISG will build a new glazed entrance portico, create a contemporary reception area and form a secondary entrance. Major structural alterations will see the introduction of new roof lights on the podium deck and performance glazing to the southern elevation to maximise the volume of natural light entering the building’s lower levels. The existing restaurant and hard landscaping elements on the high walkway area will be carefully removed and a new attractive landscaping scheme introduced to enhance the public area surrounding City Tower.

The tower’s façade will also be upgraded as part of the programme, with ISG installing replacement aluminium cladding panels to enhance the visual impact of the building. Significant structural work will also be carried out across the tower’s roof with the introduction of enlarged plant openings and removal and replacement of existing water tanks.

ISG will fit out the open plan office accommodation to Cat A standard and undertake a major programme of mechanical and electrical works to improve the efficiency of building services. This work will be carried out on a seasonal basis to minimise disruption to tenants in occupation across the remaining floors within the building. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2013.

ISG’s Stuart Deverill, managing director - London, commented: “Securing this high profile project was a hard fought process and our appointment undoubtedly recognises ISG’s capabilities delivering complex, logistically challenging schemes. As clients look to enhance the value and performance of their property portfolios, asset optimisation schemes represent an important source of opportunities for ISG, particularly with our requisite experience and delivery track record.”

Shea Concrete Products acquires Utility Precast and diversifies product rang

Shea Concrete Products, offering a full array of environmentally-friendly precast concrete products, has taken a number of steps to bolster the company. Shea Concrete’s products include ReCon Retaining Wall Systems, septic tanks, Easi-Set Precast Concrete Buildings, stormwater management products and many other precast concrete products such as concrete and brick steps.

Earlier this year, Shea Concrete purchased Utility Precast Inc., a provider of electrical, telephone, communication and gas utilities precast concrete products. The West Wareham facility became the fourth location added to Shea’s lineup of plants in Amesbury and Wilmington, MA and Nottingham, NH. This strategic acquisition allowed Shea Concrete to offer an entirely new line of products to its growing list of clients and resulted in Shea Concrete being selected for projects that it would not have been in the past.

“We made a conscious decision in a down economy to not shift our forward-thinking and to continue to pursue opportunities that benefit our customers and the community,” said Greg Stratis, Shea Concrete’s Amesbury plant manager. This year alone, the company has hired 12 people and diversified its product line as a result of its recent acquisition and an influx of new projects.

Recently Shea Concrete was hired to provide cable trenches for the NSTAR Substation in Waltham MA, as well as telephone and electric utility structures for the Makepeace River Run Project in Plymouth, MA. At the Westover AFB Airfield in Chicopee, MA, Shea Concrete provided runway light can bases.

“The contractor was looking to reduce the amount of interruption on site, so precast was a better option,” said Stratis. “Precast is a great alternative to manufacturing on site, especially at airports where delays cause major problems.” Shea Concrete also recently supplied block and engineering for a 20-foot high gravity ReCon Retaining Wall and provided boat ramp slabs for a boat launch in Lynn, MA.

Said Stratis, “We are poised for further organizational growth in an industry that has much to offer contractors and engineers to make their jobs easier.”

National awards recognises partnership putting customers at the heart of decision making

Kier Stoke and Stoke-on-Trent City Council have won a national Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) Award. The partnership was announced the winner of the Excellence in Working Together category for its project ‘Reigniting the Customer Experience’ at the central region finals earlier in the year and has now gone on to win the category nationally.

The award recognises Kier Stoke and Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s work to ensure their responsive repairs service was both time efficient and cost effective, while meeting the needs of the local community.

The winning project began in May 2010 with Kier Stoke working in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council to launch a ‘systems thinking’ review of its service provision. A team made up of representatives from the two organisations and residents monitored customer calls, visited the contact centre and followed the responsive repair logging process from the initial call through to completion.

In order to implement the recommendations made by the team, a new dedicated call centre was launched - initially as a trial including a small number of residents in August 2010 - and then rolled out across the city in January 2011. The centre has reduced call waiting times for residents from five minutes to an average of just one minute, and it now takes an average of only three minutes for the initial call to be logged.

The changes introduced improved performance dramatically; the average repair on a social housing property is now undertaken in four days (97 hours) and, on average, customers now rate the service as 9.9 when asked for a score out of 10.

Kier regional managing director, David Mawson, said: “We are delighted to have received national recognition for the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm that have been evident from both Kier Stoke and Stoke-on-Trent City Council through this project, which ensures we deliver an unsurpassed service. To receive a TPAS Award is a superb accolade and demonstrates the commitment from both organisations to true partnership working.”

Cabinet member for housing, neighbourhoods and community safety, Cllr Janine Bridges, said: “To receive national recognition for the good practices being undertaken by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, our tenants, and our partners Kier is a wonderful achievement for all concerned. We want to make Stoke-on-Trent a great place to live, as outlined in our Mandate for Change, and by ensuring our customer responses are more efficient and client driven we are making great strides to achieving that goal.”

Michelle Reid, chief executive of TPAS, warmly congratulated the project on its success: "Reigniting the Customer Experience was a project that showed genuine collaborative work between tenants, landlord and the contractor. It helped all involved learn to challenge old system shortcomings to tailor a new approach with excellent results.”

The TPAS Awards are open to social housing providers, tenants and contractors to give recognition to excellent work and, vitally, to share best practice among the sector so more people benefit.

The Environmental Evolution of a Manufacturing Firm

For a Connecticut firm that manufactures close tolerance precision parts, environmental responsibility has evolved in the last 20 years from something imposed by regulators to a way of life embraced by the company and celebrated as a key differentiator. Now the company has positioned itself as a vendor that can meet or exceed all U.S. and European environmental standards, placing it at a distinct competitive advantage.

Parts degreasing operation is the catalyst for environmental change
Connecticut Spring and Stamping is a Farmington, CT-based company that manufactures springs, metal stampings, fourslide/multislide/vertislide, and assemblies from both wire and sheet metal. After winding, bending, stamping, and grinding operations, many of the products must be cleaned and degreased before a final finish is applied.
By the mid-1990s, the parts degreasing operations had become a financial and environmental burden. The 1960s-era vapor degreasers necessitated purchase of huge quantities of expensive virgin tetrachloroethylene (perc), new regulations tightened permissible air emissions and made waste perc disposal much more costly, and concerns about the health implications of worker’s exposure to perc meant reducing emissions or installing a venting system.

Facing tightening air emission regulations, CSS made a serious effort to find alternatives, eventually deciding to purchase two state-of-the-art Pero Model 2501A batch vacuum degreasers with an in-line still to recover valuable perc from the unit’s waste. The new units’ improved design halved virgin perc purchases and cut perc vapor emissions by 70 percent. The fully-contained unit discharges no water, producing only a very small chemical residue that is processed in accordance with hazardous waste disposal regulations.

The new turnkey system allowed CSS to change its hazardous waste generator status from large quantity generator to small quantity generator, which came with very welcome reductions in overhead and regulatory requirements. Reduced tetrachloroethylene purchases netted savings of nearly $40,000 a year, and hazardous waste disposal costs were reduced by $7,500. In addition, CSS virtually eliminated air emissions from the prior system. Finally, dramatically reduced odors removed the need for personal protective equipment or an exhaust system.

The results of the new system far exceeded their expectations, and are seen by Chuck Thomas, CSS’s VP of Operations and Environmental officer, as the single most significant factor that shifted the company’s thinking and set it on its current path of going above and beyond requirements to doing what is best from an environmental point of view.

“We knew our old equipment needed to be replaced, and we had a variety of lower cost options, but we decided to go for this top of the line system for the sake of our employees, the environment, and to set us up for improved manufacturing processes to keep up with the times,” said Thomas. “The results opened up our eyes to the extended benefits of environmental compliance.”

In a final testament to the importance of the achievement, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection wrote a Pollution Prevention Study about the system in 1998, making CSS a veritable poster child for investing in environmental excellence.

CSS extends success

After its success with its foray into cutting edge environmental equipment, CSS has moved to a situation where it goes over and above every existing Connecticut requirement, actively looking for an environmentally preferable alternative for every chemical or substance used in the plant. It has been cited in numerous customer audits as well ahead of other similar vendors in environmental compliance.

“We do not ship anything that is not environmentally compliant, nor do we allow any chemical in the plant that is dangerous to employees or hazardous,” said Thomas. “We do not even allow samples into the plant without first doing a MSDS review.” Thomas explains that every hazardous substance brought into the plant increases the possibility of a spill, or emissions to the air or land, or exposure to workers. He gives the example of acetone, which is not allowed in the plant.

On a couple of occasions, CSS has turned away business when the customer insists upon using a particular hazardous chemical, rather than a suggested substitute. Overall, the company believes it has gained more business than it has lost by being so attuned to environmental and hazardous waste concerns. Thomas adds that CSS is always looking for newer and better options for chemical substitutions, but is careful to make sure that new options are thoroughly vetted before being accepted for use.

According to Thomas, CSS used to require sewer permits to allow discharge of processed water into the sewer system, but now all processed water is evaporated into clean steam. Also, sludge is no longer placed in the sewer system but is removed by an environmental disposal firm.

In addition to the attention paid to hazardous waste substitutions, and the reduction in wastewater disposal and air emissions, Thomas conducts weekly and monthly audits for storm water runoff, spill prevention control, drum area inspection, and spill preparedness. Reuse and recycling of corrugated packaging materials is also an integral part of the facility’s operations.

As a certified trainer, Thomas trains 40 people internally for annual hazardous waste materials certification, including such topics as hazardous communications, solvent safety, hazardous waste management, spill response, and DOT security.

“We are continually looking to the next advance in environmental compliance, which is becoming increasingly important to many Fortune 500 companies,” said Thomas. “In addition to U.S. rules, we comply with European Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), as well as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances) standards as part of our cost of doing business.”

Historic Peterborough Restaurant Scheme Secured by ISG

ISG has been awarded a project to create a new Carluccio’s restaurant and a speculative retail unit by developer Hammerson. The scheme will link the property firm’s Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough with the adjacent Grade II listed Miss Pears Building.

ISG is already on site at Queensgate Shopping Centre delivering a scheme to create a new two storey Primark store for Hammerson. This latest project will see the contractor complete refurbishment, extension and new-build elements over a tight, 15-week programme, while tackling the challenges of a listed building and severely restricted site access.

The Miss Pears Building is a former 1860s alms house, which was extended in 1902 following a donation by the eponymous Miss Pears. Until recently, the area of the building that will become the Carluccio’s restaurant was a tea room and ISG will carry out a complete strip out, including demolition of some interior walls and creation of new door openings. An extension to the side of the existing building will complete the new restaurant space and ISG will hand over the scheme as a shell ready for fit out by Carluccio’s in early September.

The new-build retail unit will be located on the corner of the alms house and the shopping centre, connecting the two buildings. The original façade of the alms house will be retained as the rear internal wall of the unit, complete with leaded windows, and the side wall will be formed by the adjoining shopping centre. ISG will erect a steel frame with a reconstituted stone façade and curved glass frontage to create the retail unit and install a stainless steel coated roof. The unit will also be handed over as a shell ready for fit out by the new tenant.

ISG’s Phillip Allerton, managing director – East, commented: “This is an innovative project that will maximise the impact of the architectural features of the Miss Pears Building, while providing contemporary accommodation for Carluccio’s and the new retail tenant. It is an excellent example of how ingenious design can maximise the footprint and value of a client’s property assets and we are confident that our project management experience and proactive approach to overcoming logistical challenges will contribute to an outstanding construction solution.”

Bob McGrouther, National Sales Manager for Tec Ties, said: “Bloor Homes has decided to use our tangle free closed end wall ties for their health and safety benefits.

“The closed end of the wall tie prevents tangling and is an in-built safety feature to eliminate accidents and injury to those on site.”

He added: “We are delighted that the safety aspects of our products have been recognised by national housebuilder Bloor Homes. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial working relationship with both Bloor Homes and Browns Builders’ Merchants.”

Chris Burton, Group Commercial Director, of Bloor Homes, said: “Bloor Homes were looking for a closed end wall tie that would prevent any snagging. Tec Ties provides the ideal solution.”

Jerry Wheeler, Managing Director of Browns Builders’ Merchants Limited, said: “We are delighted to be asked by national housebuilders Bloor Homes to supply these innovative wall ties to their building sites and to extend our existing relationship with them further.”

Based in New Mills, in Derbyshire, Tec Ties manufactures a range of construction fixings, including the tangle free wall ties.

CONSTRUCTION PRIORITIES AT INDUSTRY SUMMIT SET OUT BY MINISTERS

MORE than 500 delegates attended UBM’s Government Construction Summit 2012 with leading construction industry figures hailing it as the sector’s most important construction event of the year.

The event was organised by Building Magazine in conjunction with the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills to encourage greater levels of dialogue between the construction sector and Government departments.

Attendees heard keynote speeches from Government Construction Advisor Paul Morrell and Minister for the Cabinet Office, the Rt. Hon. Francis Maude MP, as well as Mark Prisk MP, Minister for Business and Enterprise.

The inaugural one-day event was held at Park Plaza, Westminster, in London. Tom Broughton, Brand Director, Building, said: “We’ve had a fantastic turn out to the event confirming the Government Construction Summit’s place at the heart of the construction agenda. “We want to see the pubic and private sector work better together and this conference is a sign of that improving relationship. Building magazine will be checking on its progress in the coming months.”

A stellar line up of industry speakers set out their thoughts on how to better procure major public projects and increase value. Dr Uwe Krueger, Atkins’ Chief Executive Officer, said: "The UK Government has again made it clear the infrastructure sector must continue to create efficiencies for the public purse. Partnership is key, with the Government continuing to cut the red tape that can act as a drag on its supplies, and the sector must respond by showing the world-class innovation that the UK is famed for. “With London 2012 just 25 days away, we must emulate the best athletes and create a fitter industry capable of beating all-comers.”

Mike Putnam, President & CEO of Skanska UK, said: "Around 40 percent of the projects we deliver as an industry are procured by the public sector. I believe that by sharing best practice across a number of areas, we can help both the future of the construction sector in the UK and, in the longer term, the British Economy. “The Government Construction Summit has been a great way for us to facilitate such collaboration.”

Autodesk and Atkins were Platinum sponsors of the event, with Skanska, CITB Construction Skills and Laing O’Rourke as Gold Sponsors.

Manufacturing Engineering Scholarships

Students pursuing a major in manufacturing engineering receive core curriculum in science and mathematics. Within the specialty students study more focused components of a manufacturing environment including technological and production processes associated with all aspects of manufacturing.

The job of a Manufacturing Engineer includes designing, analyzing and implementing innovative systems and processes that streamline the production of materials and goods. Professionals may be asked to consider manufacturing from a wide perspective, including financial, technical, and labor related aspects.

Part of the mission behind the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is to provide monetary and professional support to member students. To those ends the organization sponsors a heady array of scholarships for students at all levels of manufacturing engineering studies. A few include:

Caterpillar Scholars Awards are offered to high school seniors enrolling in a manufacturing engineering major at a four-year college. Preference is given to minority students with proven academic talent.
Phoenix Scholarships go to students pursuing manufacturing engineering in a college in Arizona.
E. Wayne Kay Community College Scholarships are available to manufacturing engineering students attending a two-year community college program. Eligible applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA to be considered.
High school students who already are engaged in manufacturing engineering activities and are members of the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) not only have access to extracurricular know-how and industry-related activities, but they also are eligible for scholarships. The Next Generation Scholarship Fund is designed to attract those graduating high school students with superior academic aptitude especially in engineering.

College Scholarships

The College of Engineering and Architecture at the University of North Dakota offers scholarships relative to students in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering program. Most of the departmental scholarships are available to upper level and graduate students, including the Helgason Scholarship. Incoming students must apply for general academic or financial scholarships through the Financial Aid Department.

Wayne State University offers students scholarships through the department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. Students must write an essay outlining their career goals as well as include letters of recommendation from faculty and a professional resume. Applicants being considered for the awards may also be subject to an interview.

A few of the nearly dozen scholarships sponsored by the College of Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Stout are:

Rath Foundation Scholarships are awarded to new or transfer students who are at the top of their class academically. Up to $6,000 possible.
An upper level manufacturing engineering student with an internship already under his or her belt may qualify for the John Entorf Scholarship. Awards are up to $2,000.
3M Wisconsin Community Affairs Council Scholarships are specifically designed for students in at least their junior year of the ME program. Awards are $1,000.
Minority Scholarships

Traditionally minority students have been underrepresented in the sciences and engineering fields. For this reason minority students, including women, will find an almost endless array of scholarships all designed to offer the best support possible: money.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) annually awards well over 100 scholarships to female students pursuing degrees in an accredited engineering program. Applicants may be undergraduate or graduate students.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) offers dozens of scholarships funded by generous corporate sponsors like ExxonMobil, Delta Airlines and Northrop Grumman. In most cases applicants must demonstrate above average academic talents in the major.

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society sponsors scholarships for students majoring in an array of engineering degrees, including manufacturing engineering. Applicants must be ready to offer a Certificate of Indian Blood along with other specified criteria.

Lakesmere wins Product Performance Award for the design and installation of the London Aquatics Centre's roof package

Lakesmere has secured a top prize in recognition of its work on the iconic London Aquatics Centre at the Balfour Beatty London Aquatics Centre Supplier Awards.

The award ceremony celebrates the contributions made by suppliers to the successful creation of the London Aquatics Centre and out of the 135 companies involved in the scheme, Lakesmere was one of just 15 who were shortlisted for a prize.

Lakesmere received the ‘Product Performance Award’ for “achieving consistently high output through good planning and efficient working” throughout the design and installation of the Aquatics Centre’s complex roof package.

Commenting on the award win, Lakesmere’s Construction Director, Anthony Kirkby said: “The London Aquatics Centre has been one of our most complex contracts to date and we are delighted that our ability to rise to the challenge has been recognized with this award. Client satisfaction is extremely important to Lakesmere and so this accolade is even more special in that it has been awarded by Balfour Beatty. It was a real team effort and everyone at Lakesmere is extremely proud of this achievement."

Lakesmere utilised the highly flexible Kalzip XT aluminium cladding system to help bring to life the dramatic roof design of architect Zaha Hadid. Inspired by the notion of a swimmer breaking the water, the striking wave-form roof smoothly sweeps upwards from the south edge before curving gently down at the northern side. A subtle upwards curve also features at both the eastern and western tips of the roof to further emphasise the structure’s fluid design.

Lakesmere’s extensive design expertise was called upon at the pre-tender stage to value-engineer and develop the complex roof structure. Utilising the latest 3D design technology and logistical planning tools to create a virtual model of the London Aquatics Centre, Lakesmere was then able to realise the architect’s challenging design brief and ensure the successful delivery of the project

Lakesmere has also completed a number of other projects on the Olympic site including the Olympic Park Energy Centres and the Media Centre Building and is extremely proud to be involved in the London 2012 Games.”
