JB Citideck Used For The Oxford Brookes University Postgraduate Lounge

The postgraduate lounge at Oxford Brookes University, which will also be used as a conference centre, forms part of the Marston Road Phase 3 project, providing an additional 361 study bedrooms for postgraduates close to existing halls of residence. Students at Oxford Brookes University are enjoying the use of the postgraduate lounge built at the centre of an eco-friendly £16m ‘village’ development, and surrounded by JBCitideck®, a smooth anti-slip timber decking from John Brash.

The main contractor on the project is the Leadbitter Group, who specified John Brash’s JBCitideck® for the roof terrace, ground level terraced areas of the postgraduate lounge and balconies from the student flats.

JB Citideck® combines all the safety benefits of JB Antislip Plus® inserts with the user-friendly nature of smooth deck boards, which are much easier to walk on in heeled shoes in urban environments compared to castellated decking. It is also provides a smoother surface for wheelchair users

In addition to providing improved walking comfort for users with heeled shoes, JBCitideck® is frequently specified for outdoor areas where food is served. Its smooth surface prevents food, dirt or litter becoming trapped, making it much easier to clean for maintenance teams.

Architect on the project Michael Magri, of GSS Architecture’s Bristol office explained: “We specified our general requirement which was for timber decking to fit with the natural aspect of the design – the ground floor terrace surrounds and cantilevers over the central water feature. The anti-slip requirement was a major priority in this area, which will have heavy pedestrian traffic throughout the year.”

John Brash’s JB Antislip Plus® inserts have been independently tested by the HSE’s Health and Safety Laboratory, using a Stanley Pendulum Test (as described in BS 7976 parts 1-3, 2002) operated to issue 3, 2005 of the UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) guidelines. JB Antislip Plus® was shown to significantly exceed the minimum requirement for ‘low potential for slip’ in both wet and dry conditions.

John Brash recommends the use of JB Antislip Plus® inserts for all decks where there is public access, or a high level of pedestrian traffic. The Oxford Brookes University’s was supplied with two JB Antislip Plus® inserts, which provide users with a safe, slip resistant surface in all weathers.

JB Antislip Plus® and JBCitideck® are created using a unique formula of resin-based aggregate inserts that are injected into the company’s range of structural deck boards. The inserts are offered in a range of colours that can be used to highlight changes in gradient or levels where steps or slopes are located.

The JBCitideck® range used for the Oxford Brookes University project is a structural timber deck board manufactured from kiln dried European Redwood, graded by John Brash’s own team of fully qualified graders to BS 4978:2007 (Visual strength grading of softwood) strength class C16. It is vacuum preservative treated and unique in carrying a 25 year guarantee against wood rotting fungi and insect attack.

John Brash timber products are all manufactured within a quality system accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2008 and only sourced from sustainable and well managed forests that have either FSC (Forestry Stewardship Certification) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) schemes.

The company supplies a wide range of sustainable timber building solutions including roofing battens, scaffold boards, timber cladding, cedar shingles, cedar shakes and anti-slip timber decking.
